Sacramental process for baptised children

Baptism

Before a child is baptised at Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the parents are required to attend a preparation session where the aspects and symbols of the baptism are discussed, as well as the importance of baptism into the Catholic community. Baptisms are celebrated on Sundays after children are presented and anointed during Sunday Mass.

Sacramental Process for Baptised Children

The process of completing sacramental initiation for children already baptised is family-based, parish-centred and school-supported. In this way, chidren are brought up to be full members of a community of faith.

The sacraments of confirmation and eucharist are celebrated at such time parents believe their children have reached the age of reason (although the parish does determine a minimum age limit). The sacrament of penance is also celebrated with children as part of the journey, before first communion.

Children and parents engage in a period of preparation in the midst of the parish community before the celebration of each sacrament. Parents are supported in their responsibility and priviledge as first educators of the faith to their children.

Enrolment

Enrolment forms for the sacramental process are made available each year around February. A form needs to be completed for each sacrament to be celebrated (to assist with parish administration), and returned by the due date specified to the parish office. Parents are asked at that time to make a financial contribution towards the cost of the resources used for the sacramental preparation of their child.

Confirmation for Adults

Sometimes Catholic adults have been baptised and celebrated their first communion as children, but for one reason or another have not celebrated confirmation.

In the latter half of each year, the Diocese of Parramatta celebrates confirmation with adults who have found themselves in this situation and wish to complete their sacramental initiation. If you are a parishioner who has not celebrated their confirmation, and would like to do so, contact our parish office to ensure that you are included in the necessary preparation and the list of candidates.

Penance (Reconciliation)

Individual reconciliation (first form) is celebrated every Saturday, 9:30 - 10:00 am. Alternatively, if you urgently need to celebrate the sacrament at other times, you can contact the parish office.

Penitential Services are also celebrated in the parish during Lent and Advent.

Marriage

Marriages are generally celebrated at Our Lady of Mount Carmel on Saturdays.

Couples who plan to marry should contact the parish office at least six months in advance to allow for the processing of all necessary paperwork. One of our priests will work with you to prepare the liturgical elements of your very special day. They will also arrange for a rehearsal to be conducted with you and anyone else involved shortly before the wedding.

All couples that marry at Our Lady of Mount Carmel are expected to complete a marriage preparation course before the wedding. To assist, the Diocese of Parramatta conducts a marriage preparation course. Contact Catholic Care Social Services for more information.

We believe that the liturgical celebration of your marriage is a very important occasion. To help make your wedding the best it can be, our parish office can put you in touch with our parish florist and music ministers who are highly skilled and are the most familiar with our church. They also provide their services at very reasonable rates.

Funerals

While the death of someone close to us may bring grief and sorrow, as Catholics, we also stand firm in our hope of eternal life.

Those responsible for preparing the funeral of a loved one can often find themselves trying to attend to a number of responsibilities, in addition to coping with their own feelings of grief and loss. Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish is able to assist you in the preparation and celebration of a funeral.

Some parishioners' funerals have taken place during the usual 9:00 am Mass of a weekday. This allows parishioners who knew them to join with the family and friends of the deceased in prayer.

For enquiries and assistance in relation to funerals, contact the parish office.
