Global Mission

Carmelite East Timor Mission

As Wentworthville is a Carmelite Parish, it has been asked by the Carmelite Province to assist in supporting the new Carmelite parish of Zumalai, Timor Leste (East Timor). A part of the Australian Carmelite Province, Timor Leste has been working to establish itself as a nation since it gained independence from Indonesia. Wentworthville has been supporting the Carmelite Mission during that time.

Fundraising from Wentworthville has contributed to the establishment and continuation of a number of vital projects. These projects have included the construction and improvement of education and medical services in the village communities the Carmelites serve, and the training of local people to become school teachers.

The generous support of parishioners and friends makes a difference in changing people's lives for the better. In May 2015, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish sent a cheque for $23,709.50 to Fr Denis Andrew (Prior Provincial of the Carmelites in Australia and East Timor) to assist with various projects in East Timor. Fr Denis sent a letter of thanks - here is an excerpt:

Know that you share with us our deep desire to make a difference to Timor-Leste. The people need our support to help them rebuild their country . . . Your gift will assist us in our ongoing development work in the areas of education, helping to reduce high levels of unemployment, health, aiding people suffering from malnutrition, supplying water to the villages and helping to establish farm projects . . . I thank you for your generosity. Be assured of our prayers for you and know that your gift to us will be used well.

Parish East Timor Committee

The East Timor Committee is a group of interested parishioners who share a common faith and vision for the Carmelites in Timor Leste (East Timor). Underpinning our mission is the recognition of the many historic, geographic and spiritual links between our two nations. Our vision is to be a proactive group concerned with the following on-going broad areas:

1. Spiritual support, visits and exchanges - to forge links on many levels between our two Carmelite communities.

2. Education - to focus on the East Timor Committee, the OLMC parishioners and the wider community in order to increase awareness of the issues facing the world's youngest nation as a whole, the remote parish of Zumalai and the village of Raimea in particular.

3. Regular communication, feedback and accountability - to keep parishioners informed on East Timor issues, events, news and progress on development projects. Integral to this process is the ongoing dialogue with the Australian Coordinator of the Carmelite Mission in East Timor.

4. Social justice issues
- to raise awareness of the many social justice issues facing the people of East Timor as a whole, the remote parish of Zumalai and the village of Raimea in particular.

5. Supporting development - to centre on the Zumalai parish and in particular the Raimea community through financial and other means. This support will focus particularly on the area of education, which is seen as the basis of future development.

6. Parish fund raising - to practically support development projects and keep the needs of our sister parish in the minds of the parishioners.

Through these means and others that the East Timor Committee deems important, we seek to become a true sister community to the Carmelites in East Timor by serving their needs and fulfilling our mission in Christ.
